Abstract: The purpose of this
paper is to analyze the complex relationship between religion and politics in
Brazil, under a historical and cultural perspective grounded on a political reality. It investigates
religious impartiality on issues of political interest and religious presence
in political debates. It observes the great religious influence in the
elections and the use of Christian values in Brazilian society as a basis for
defending conservative agendas opposed to the rights of minorities. It examines
the need for a legal and philosophical reflection on the relationship between
religion and politics concerning State Secularism, encouraging the academic
discussion related to the historical, political and cultural aspects of Law. It
reflects the coexistence between political and religious spheres, as well as
their contribution in the legal and cultural construction of Brazilian
Identity.
